Increasing your skill-set and expanding services

Did you know that as a practitioner of counselling skills, you already have many of the skills that coaches use? Since life coaching and business coaching are increasingly used for personal and professional development, this is a service you could provide. Coaching skills help clients set goals, take responsibility for their actions and move forward in a more focussed way.

Rowan Consultancy is now offering a course specifically for counsellors, psychotherapists and professionals who use counselling skills. This enables you to understand the relationship between coaching and counselling, introduces you to a coaching competency framework and 2 coaching models, which you can integrate into your existing practice. At the end of the course you will also be in a better position to decide whether you wish to train to become a coach.

Who is this course for?

  • Practising counsellors who want to integrate coaching skills into their existing practice, especially towards the end as clients become more robust.
  • Professionals using counselling skills as part of their role, and who have gained at least a Certificate in Counselling Skills.

A prerequisite for this course is that you have a 120 hours Certificate in Counselling Skills or a diploma in counselling or psychotherapy.

Overview

This course will introduce you to the difference between coaching and counselling, together with some coaching skills which complement your existing skills base. This will enable you to either integrate coaching skills into your counselling work or help you decide whether you would like further training as a coach.

By the end of the course you will:

  • be familiar with the International Coach Federation (ICF) Core Coaching Competencies
  • have practised the TGROW and SPACE coaching models
  • have considered how to integrate coaching into your counselling practice
  • understand some of the differences and similarities between coaching and counselling

This course consists of 12 tutor-contact hours.

Coaching for Counsellors FAQ

Can I advertise myself as a coach after attending this course?

Yes, but we don’t think you should.
Coaching, like counselling, is not a regulated profession, so anyone can call themselves a coach without any training, experience of qualification. However, that would not be ethical behaviour.
This 2-day training gives you two coaching models that you can use, and some ideas on contracting. But to practice as a coach, we believe you need to join a professional coaching body (eg BACP Coaching Division or ICF), abide by their code of ethics and complaints policy, attend coaching supervision and CPD and do a longer, assessed training to gain a coaching qualification.

Does this course qualify me to be a coach?

No. This course is approved by the Association for Coaching, as CPD, and you will receive an attendance certificate with their logo on it. But there is no assessment, so attending this course doesn’t mean you have attained a standard of using coaching skills, so it is not a qualification.

Does this course give me coaching skills that I can use with my counselling clients?

Yes!
You will learn and practice the TGROW and SPACE coaching models which you can add to your toolbox and use with your counselling clients, when appropriate.  This is usually towards the end of their counselling with you, when they feel more robust and want to make tangible changes in their lives. A coaching approach can support them in this work.

Will this course teach me the difference between coaching and counselling?

Yes!
This will give you a taster of coaching, which can help you decide whether you want to train as a coach or not.

Online Course Information

This online training session will use Zoom, reliable and good quality free software, for holding online meetings. You will be able to see and interact with fellow participants throughout the sessions and split off into breakout rooms for skills practice and small group discussions.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to inform us in advance of any special requirements so that we can try to accommodate them.

Why Rowan Training?

Rowan is well positioned to deliver coaching skills training for counsellors, since we started as a counselling and psychotherapy agency and have now expanded to include individual and team coaching.  So we understand the coaching-counselling spectrum, the different skills needed and what it’s like to be a counsellor moving into coaching.

We believe you don’t learn skills by just being lectured or seeing slides, so we use experiential learning where you relate the theory to your own situation and practise coaching skills on one another with feedback from tutors, as well as us giving demonstrations of coaching skills. It’s the best way to learn!

We are proud to have our Coaching Skills for Counsellors training approved by the Association for Coaching.

A very useful introduction to coaching for counsellors which recognises their previous skills and experience and looks at how to combine and integrate both approaches to create a powerful intervention for personal change and growth.
