Critical incidents, such as fire, suicide, robbery, fatal accident, sudden illness or a holdup, can affect workplace teams. These can occur onsite or off-site. Rowan Consultancy provides a critical incident response service, outlined here, where we work with groups in the workplace, helping them to process the incident.

This training explains how to provide structured support for a group after a critical incident. This structure can also be used with individuals. We use interactive exercises for you to practice the skills with groups.

Places are limited to a maximum of 12 participants.

Who is this course for?

Anyone with people skills who wants to support groups or individuals after critical incidents. You need to be comfortable holding benign authority in groups, providing psycho-education and facilitating the group process.

If you have experienced trauma in the six months leading up to this training, we recommend that you don’t participate, since it may be too raw. If you’d like to discuss this with us please contact us. The scenarios that the group will practice include a suicide and a fatal workplace accident.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this online, interactive training you will:

  • be familiar with the 7-stage Mitchell model for Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) for a structured group discussion after a critical incident (Mitchell and Everly 1996)
  • understand that CISD is part of a broader programme of Critical Incident Stress Management
  • be aware of some criticisms made of CISD
  • be aware of different behaviours which may be displayed by group members during the CISD and how to respond to these
  • have participated in role play scenarios as a Responder and as a Recipient, using a Mitchell model response
  • understand how trauma may affect your counselling clients

Online Course Information

This online training session will use Zoom, reliable and good quality free software, for holding online meetings. You will be able to see and interact with fellow participants throughout the sessions and split off into breakout rooms for skills practice and small group discussions.

Please ensure that you have adequate broadband connection as Rowan Consultancy cannot be held responsible or issue refunds for any difficulties with internet connection. You will also need a webcam and microphone so that the trainer can see and hear you. It is the applicant’s responsibility to inform us in advance of any special requirements so that we can try to accommodate them.

Why Rowan Training?

We believe you don’t learn skills by just being lectured to or seeing slides, so we use experiential learning where you relate the theory to your own situation and practise coaching skills on one another with feedback from trainers. It’s the best way to learn!

A thoroughly enjoyable two-day training with peers. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was wonderful to be a participant and an observer in this training.

Associate Trainer, Essential Training

The facilitators were very knowledgeable on the subject and I appreciated the sharing of their experiences in the field. I was apprehensive about doing roleplay but the whole group were very supportive which made the process comfortable.
